Dan Buckley attended  La Salle Academy in New York City, where he won city basketball titles as both a player and a coach at La Salle Academy. After La Salle, Buckley played at Duke, where he was an All-Southern Conference player. Dan earned First-Team All-Conference honors at Duke during the  1944-45 season and served as a team captain.  He returned to New York to play at St. John’s graduating in 1950.

Coach Buckley coached at La Salle Academy for 22 years, winning four city championships. He was named All-City and was voted playoff MVP in 1943 when La Salle won the championship. Buckley is a member of the CHSAA Hall of Fame and the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame.
