Hyman "Hy" Gotkin (August 16, 1922 – April 11, 2004) a Brooklyn native,  attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn. He played for St. John's University from 1942–44 and won the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) championships in 1943-44. Gotkin was one of the best long-range shooters in college basketball at the time and an excellent passer. He later had a four-year professional career, playing in the American Basketball League.

Professionally he played for the New York Gothams (1945-46), and the Elizabeth Braves (1946-47). Career highlights Third-team All-American – Argosy, SN (1945), and St. John's Hall of Fame.
