Debbie "Little Pearl" Mason attended Bryant High School in Queens. The  “Little Pearl” nickname was given to her because of a style of play that resembled Earl Monroe of the New York Knicks. She later played at Queens College (1971-1975) for legendary coach Lucille Kyvallos. The Queens College team made sports history by playing in the first women's collegiate basketball game at Madison Square Garden. Mason's professional career would take her to Sweden for a year then back home to New York to play for the New York Stars.
