John Warren, Jr. was born in Sparta, Georgia,  attended Far Rockaway High School in Queens, New York, and played at St. John's University from (1966 to 1969). He scored 1,306 points in 84 games and was considered the strongest defender. The St. John's basketball media guide says that Warren "was perhaps St. John’s most complete player".

Warren was selected in 1969 in the 1st round, 11th overall pick by the New York Knicks. He played for the New York Knicks (1969-70), Cleveland Cavaliers (1970-74), and the Long Island Sounds (1975-76). Career highlights  Championship with New York in 1970, and in  St. John's Hall of Fame in 1986.
