Gil Reynolds was called "The Father of Basketball" in the Brownsville section Brooklyn in most of the 1960s and 70s.

For many of the boys, Coach Reynolds was a true father figure. For the childless coach, the boys were all his sons - he only kids he had.

Dying of complications from pneumonia on January 27, 2002, Reynolds also coached the Brownsville Jets and Vanguard Oilers and at Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina.

Coach Reynolds moved on to Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina to help them develop an excellent program. Under his leadership, Laurinburg won several National Prep HS Tournaments.
