Jamal Mashburn attended Cardinal Hayes High School in The Bronx, he later play for the University of Kentucky. He was the fourth-leading career scorer for the Wildcats and a consensus First-Team All-American by his junior year. The Wildcats made it to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament that year. Following the tournament he declared for the 1993 NBA draft, with Mashburn being selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the fourth pick.

As a player, he played 1993-1997 Dallas Mavericks, 1997-2000 Miami Heat, 2000-2002 Charlotte Hornets, and 2002-2005 New Orleans Hornets. Career highlights include  2003 NBA All-Star, 2003 NBA Third-Team, 1994 NBA All-Rookie First-Team, 1993 Consensus First-Team All-American, 1993 SEC Player of the Year, 1993 SEC Athlete of the Year, 1990 Second-team Parade All-American, 1990 Mr. New York Basketball,
