Joe Hammond, nicknamed "The Destroyer", is a legendary American streetball basketball player based in Harlem, New York. He attended Taft High School in the Bronx, but dropped out of school in the 9th grade.
He never played college basketball.
Joe played professionally in the Eastern Basketball Association (EBA) with the Allentown Jets and Garden State Colonials, won the EPBL championship with the Jets in 1970.
Hammond once scored 50 points in a half against Julius Erving at a Rucker Park game.
Selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the fifth pick in the 1971 NBA hardship draft, Joe was also selected by the Lakers in the 1971 Early Entry draft.
For personal reasons he turned down the opportunity to play for LA. He also turned down a three-year contract to play in the American Basketball Association.
On September 19, 2024 - Joe "The Destroyer" Hammond joined the ranks of the City's elite and was inducted into the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame.
