Leonard J. Elmore a New York City native, attended Power Memorial High School. Later he attended the University of Maryland College Park (1971-74) where he was a three-time All-ACC player and an All-American in 1974. In 2002, Elmore was selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary men's basketball team, honoring him as one of the 50 greatest players in ACC history.

Elmore was drafted in 1974 in the 1st round, the 13th overall pick selected by the Washington Bullets. He played for the Indiana Pacers (1974-79), Kansas City Kings (1979-80), Milwaukee Bucks (1980-81), New Jersey Nets (1981-83), and the New York Knicks (1983-84). Career highlights consensus second-team All-American (1974), First-team All-ACC (1974), and 2× Second-team All-ACC (1972, 1973).
