Walter "The Truth" Berry attended Benjamin Franklin High School in East Harlem (Now Manhattan Center for Math & Science). He was a playground legend in New York, and earned the name "The Truth". He played at San Jacinto Junior College in Pasadena, Texas where he led the Ravens to their second-ever National Junior College Championship in 1984 with a 35-2 record. Berry later attended St. John's and in 1985, he was second in scoring behind Chris Mullin on St. John's Final Four team.

 

He was named the Big East Player of the Year, and John Wooden National Player of the Year. The Portland Trailblazers selected Berry in the first round with their 14th pick and traded him to San Antonio. He was traded to New Jersey, then to Houston left the NBA for Europe where he played with Olympiakos of Greece, leading them to a championship.  He played and led teams to championships in Greece, Italy, and Spain, where he scored a league-record 52 points. 


In 2006,  St. John's University honored him and nine other former St. John's players with the Legacy Honors. Permanent banners were raised to the rafters of Carnesecca Area for Berry, Tony Jackson, Chris Mullin, Malik Sealy, Dick McGuire, Joe Lapchick, Lou Carnesecca and Alan Seiden, Mark Jackson, and Lloyd "Sonny" Dove.
